How to play
- Paste your student roster, one name per line, and set rows and columns.
- Optionally add keep-apart pairs who shouldn't sit next to each other.
- Tap Build seating chart, then lock any seats that must stay fixed.
- Tap Shuffle unlocked seats as needed, then Print chart when it's ready.
Seating Chart Randomizer builds a fair classroom layout in seconds and still respects the rules you need it to. Paste your roster, pick a grid of rows and columns, and it randomly fills every desk. Lock any seat you don't want touched — a student with an IEP accommodation, someone near an outlet for a device — and mark pairs who talk too much or simply shouldn't sit next to each other; the shuffle will keep them apart whenever a valid arrangement exists. Reshuffle as many times as you like, only the unlocked seats move, and when you're happy with it, print the chart directly from the browser. Everything runs locally with no roster ever leaving your device.
Frequently asked questions
- What happens to locked seats when I shuffle?
- Locked seats never move. Only students in unlocked seats get reshuffled, so you can pin down accommodations first and randomize everyone else around them.
- Will keep-apart pairs ever end up next to each other?
- The randomizer actively avoids seating keep-apart pairs in adjacent desks (left, right, front, or back) and will retry the shuffle until it finds an arrangement that works, when one exists.
- What if my grid is too small for the class?
- The tool checks seat count against your roster before building the chart and tells you exactly how many more seats you need, so you never end up with students missing a desk.
