AbraCalc

Random Pairs

Paste your class list and generate fresh think-pair-share partners each round. The tool remembers who has already paired up so repeats stay rare, and odd counts get one trio instead of leaving someone out. Works offline.

How to play

  1. Paste or type student names, one per line, into the roster box.
  2. Tap Make Pairs to generate the first round of partners.
  3. Tap New Round any time — fresh combinations are badged 'new pairing', and unavoidable repeats are badged 'repeat pairing'.
  4. If the class has an odd number of students, one group of three is formed and labeled 'trio this round'.

Random Pairs turns roster-shuffling into one tap. Paste your class list, one name per line, and generate think-pair-share partners for discussion, peer editing, or lab work. Each round the tool checks its own memory of who has already been paired together and steers away from repeats, so the same two students aren't stuck together every single time. Every card is labeled honestly: fresh combinations get a 'new pairing' badge, and when a small class has used up every combination, unavoidable repeats are plainly marked 'repeat pairing' instead of being disguised. If the class has an odd number of people, one trio forms instead of leaving a student without a partner. New Round reshuffles instantly, and Clear History resets the memory for a new unit or class period. Nothing is uploaded or saved between visits.

Frequently asked questions

What happens with an odd number of students?
One group becomes a trio instead of a pair, clearly marked with a trio badge, so every student is included and nobody is left standing alone.
Will the same two students keep getting paired together?
The tool tracks every pairing used since you last built the list or cleared history, and each new round actively looks for a fresh combination first. If a small class has exhausted every combination, the repeated card is honestly badged 'repeat pairing' so you can decide whether to clear history.
Does it save my class list or pairing history anywhere?
No. Everything stays in the browser tab for that session only — closing or refreshing the page clears the list and history, and nothing is ever uploaded.
