Formula

Score (%) = (Correct Answers ÷ Total Questions) × 100

Letter grade thresholds: A ≥ 90%, B ≥ 80%, C ≥ 70%, D ≥ 60%, F < 60%

How it works

This calculator divides the number of correct answers by the total number of questions, then multiplies by 100 to produce a percentage score. The percentage is mapped to a letter grade using the standard US academic scale (A/B/C/D/F). Results assume all questions carry equal weight; it does not account for partial credit or bonus questions.

Worked example

  1. Correct answers = 42, Total questions = 50.
  2. Score (%) = (42 ÷ 50) × 100 = 84%.
  3. 84% falls in the range 80–89%, which maps to a letter grade of B.

Score: 84% — Letter Grade: B

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Dividing correct answers by the total number of points when the test assigns partial credit, rather than by the number of questions.
  • Rounding the percentage to a whole number before comparing to letter-grade cutoffs, turning an 89.6% into an A when the threshold is exactly 90%.
  • Assuming letter-grade cutoffs are universal — many instructors use 93/83/73/63 as the A/B/C/D boundaries rather than the 90/80/70/60 defaults.
