Quickly see whether you are on track to pass your course and exactly how many more points you need to get there.
Formula
Pass Points = (Passing % ÷ 100) × Total Points
Points Needed to Pass = max(0, Pass Points − Current Points)
Current Grade (%) = (Current Points ÷ Total Points) × 100
How it works
This calculator determines the point total required to pass a course by converting the passing percentage threshold into an absolute point value, then subtracts the student's current earned points. If the student already meets or exceeds the pass threshold, the points needed is shown as zero and the status is Passing. The tool assumes all remaining points will be earned at once and does not break down what scores are required on future assignments.
Worked example
Worked example
- Current points = 120, Total points in course = 200, Passing percentage = 70%.
- Pass points = (70 ÷ 100) × 200 = 140 points needed to pass.
- Points still needed = max(0, 140 − 120) = 20 points.
- Current grade = (120 ÷ 200) × 100 = 60%, which is below the 70% threshold → Status: Failing.
Points Needed to Pass: 20 — Current Grade: 60% — Status: Failing
Key terms
- Passing threshold
- The minimum percentage or point total an institution or instructor requires to consider a student passing the course.
- Points needed
- The additional points a student must earn on remaining assessments in order to reach the passing threshold.

- A designation indicating that, based on current earned points, the student has not yet reached the minimum passing threshold.
Frequently asked questions
- What is a typical passing grade?
- Most US colleges require a D (60%) to pass for credit, though graduate programs and professional schools often require a C (70%) or higher.
- Does this account for remaining assignments?
- No — this calculator shows the gap between where you are and the passing threshold. Compare the needed points to the points remaining in the course.
