How it works

This calculator models final course grade as a weighted average, treating the current grade as representing the portion of the course already graded (1 − weight) and the new assignment as contributing its defined weight. The difference between the new and old final grade shows the net impact of that single assignment. It assumes the current grade already reflects all prior weighted components and that assignment weights sum to 100% across the full course.

Worked example

  1. Current final grade = 82%, Assignment weight = 20% (0.20), Score on assignment = 95%.
  2. Weight remaining for prior work = 1 − 0.20 = 0.80.
  3. New Final Grade = 82 × 0.80 + 95 × 0.20 = 65.6 + 19.0 = 84.6%.
  4. Grade Change = 84.6 − 82 = +2.6 points.

New Final Grade: 84.6% — Grade Change: +2.6 pts

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Entering the assignment weight as a whole number (20) instead of a percentage that the formula converts to a decimal (0.20), inflating the impact 100-fold.
  • Calculating the impact of one assignment while forgetting that other remaining assignments will also shift the final grade before the course ends.
  • Applying this to a dropped-score course without removing the dropped assignment's weight first, overstating how much the remaining assignment matters.
