Bar Duration Calculator
Calculate how long one bar (measure) lasts in seconds and milliseconds given a BPM and time signature.
How to use this tool
- Enter bpm, beats per bar and beat unit in the fields above.
- Results update instantly as you type — or click Calculate.
- Read your seconds per bar and the full breakdown beneath it.
Find how long each bar lasts in seconds for any tempo and time signature.

Formula
Beat duration (ms) = 60 000 ÷ BPM
Quarter-note duration (ms) = beat duration × (4 ÷ beat unit)
Bar duration (ms) = quarter-note duration × beats per bar
Bar duration (s) = bar duration (ms) ÷ 1000
How it works
This calculator determines how long a single bar lasts in real time by first converting BPM to milliseconds per beat, normalising to a quarter-note reference, then multiplying by the number of beats in the bar as defined by the time signature.
The beat-unit parameter accounts for time signatures where the beat is not a quarter note (e.g. 6/8 uses a beat unit of 8). Results are exact for constant-tempo music; they do not account for tempo changes, swing, or rubato.
Worked example
- BPM = 120, beats per bar = 4, beat unit = 4 (standard 4/4 time).
- Beat duration = 60 000 / 120 = 500 ms.
- Quarter-note duration = 500 × (4 / 4) = 500 ms.
- Bar duration = 500 × 4 = 2 000 ms = 2.0 s.
Seconds per bar: 2.0 s | Ms per bar: 2000 ms
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using the beat unit as the number of beats per bar; in 6/8 the beat unit is 8 (eighth note) and there are 6 beats, not 6 quarter notes.
- Forgetting to update the beat unit when switching from 4/4 to 3/8 or 6/8, so bar duration is calculated as if quarter notes are still the beat.
- Confusing bar duration with beat duration; at 120 BPM in 4/4, one beat is 500 ms but one bar is 2000 ms.
Key terms
- BPM (beats per minute)
- The tempo of a piece expressed as the number of beats that occur in one minute. 120 BPM means two beats per second.
- Time signature
- A notation showing how many beats are in each bar (numerator) and which note value counts as one beat (denominator), e.g. 4/4 or 6/8.
- Beat unit
- The denominator of a time signature; the note value that receives one beat. A beat unit of 4 means a quarter note gets the beat.
- Bar (measure)
- A segment of music containing a fixed number of beats as defined by the time signature. A bar divides a piece into equal rhythmic units.
- Quarter note
- A note lasting one beat in 4/4 time, equivalent to one quarter of a whole note. Used as the reference unit in tempo markings.
Frequently asked questions
- How long is a bar at 120 BPM in 4/4?
- At 120 BPM each quarter note lasts 0.5 s, so a 4-beat bar lasts 2.0 s (2000 ms).
