How to use this tool

  1. Enter pages to study, reading rate and review multiplier in the fields above.
  2. Results update instantly as you type — or click Calculate.
  3. Read your study hours needed and the full breakdown beneath it.

Plan your study schedule realistically. Enter how much material you need to cover and your reading pace to see how many hours and sessions you need.

Formula

Study Hours = (Pages ÷ Reading Rate) × Review Multiplier

3-Hour Sessions = ⌈Study Hours ÷ 3⌉

where ⌈ ⌉ denotes ceiling (round up to the next whole session).

How it works

This planner divides the total number of pages by the user's reading speed (pages per hour) to get a baseline reading time, then multiplies by a review multiplier to account for re-reading and active recall passes. The total study hours are divided by three and rounded up to give the number of standard three-hour study sessions required. Results are estimates; actual study time varies with material difficulty, focus level, and individual learning style.

Worked example

Worked example

  1. Pages to study = 200, Reading rate = 20 pages/hr, Review multiplier = 1.5×.
  2. Base reading time = 200 ÷ 20 = 10 hours.
  3. Study hours = 10 × 1.5 = 15 hours.
  4. Sessions = ⌈15 ÷ 3⌉ = ⌈5⌉ = 5 sessions.

Study Hours Needed: 15 hr — 3-Hour Sessions: 5

Key terms

Reading rate
The average number of pages a student can read and process per hour under study conditions.
Review multiplier
A factor greater than 1 that accounts for additional time spent reviewing, making notes, or testing recall beyond the initial read.
Ceiling function
A mathematical operation that rounds a value up to the nearest whole number, ensuring no partial session is left unaccounted for.
Study session
A structured block of focused study time; this tool uses three hours as the standard session length.

Frequently asked questions

What is a typical reading rate for studying?
Academic reading is usually 10–30 pages per hour depending on difficulty and the reader. Technical subjects are slower; literature is faster.
What should the review multiplier be?
A multiplier of 1.5 accounts for re-reading difficult sections and active recall practice. Use 2.0 if the material is very dense.
