How to use this tool

  1. Enter the total credit hours you're enrolled in.
  2. Choose your study hours per credit per week (2–3 is a common guideline).
  3. Enter the number of weeks in the term.
  4. Read your weekly, daily, and total study hours.

Plan your study schedule with the credit-hour rule of thumb. Enter your credit load, study hours per credit, and term length to estimate weekly, daily, and total study time.

Formula

Study hours per week = Credit hours × Study hours per credit

Study hours per day = Hours per week ÷ 7

Total study hours = Hours per week × Weeks in the term

How it works

This planner turns the classic college study rule of thumb into concrete numbers. The widely cited guideline is to study roughly two to three hours outside class for every credit hour each week. The calculator multiplies your enrolled credit hours by your chosen study-hours-per-credit to get a weekly load, spreads that across seven days, and multiplies by the term length for a full-term total.

The per-credit factor is an input, not a fixed constant, because the right intensity depends on the course mix, your background, and how the term is structured — lab-heavy or writing-intensive courses often demand more, while review courses may need less. The daily figure assumes you study every day of the week; if you prefer five study days, divide the weekly hours by five instead. Use the result to build a realistic schedule and to sanity-check whether your course load fits the time you actually have.

Worked example

15 credits, 2 study hours per credit, 16-week term

  1. Hours per week = 15 credits × 2 hours = 30 hours.
  2. Hours per day = 30 ÷ 7 ≈ 4.29 hours.
  3. Total for the term = 30 × 16 = 480 hours.

Study hours per week = 30.00 (480.00 total this term)

Study-hours-per-credit
How many hours of outside-class study you plan per credit hour each week; commonly 2–3.
Term
An academic period such as a semester (often 15–16 weeks) or a quarter (often 10 weeks).
Weekly study load
Total planned study hours per week across all enrolled courses.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the 2–3 hours per credit rule come from?
It is a long-standing academic guideline that each credit hour represents about an hour of class plus two to three hours of outside study per week. Actual needs vary by course and student.
The daily number assumes seven days — what if I study five?
Divide your weekly hours by the number of days you actually plan to study. For five days, take the weekly figure and divide by five instead of seven.
Is more study time always better?
Not necessarily — focused, spaced study often beats long unbroken sessions. Use the total as a budget and prioritize active recall and practice over passive hours.
