How to play

  1. Click Start — rows of tiles scroll down, one dark tile per row.
  2. Click only the dark (black) tiles to score points.
  3. Do NOT click white tiles — that ends the game instantly.
  4. If a dark tile scrolls past the bottom without being tapped, game over.
  5. The speed increases every 5 points — stay focused!

Click the dark tiles as they scroll down — do not miss any or tap the white ones! The speed increases with your score.

How it works

Tap Tiles is a rhythm-reflex game where a stream of tiles scrolls down the screen. Most tiles are light-coloured; a subset are dark. Your sole task is to tap every dark tile and avoid tapping any light tile.

Tapping a light tile or missing a dark tile ends the game instantly, so precision matters as much as speed. As your score climbs the scroll speed increases, demanding faster and more accurate taps.

The game is inspired by piano-tile style games and is an excellent exercise in focused visual attention under time pressure. It works well on both touchscreen and mouse.

A key technique is to look one or two rows ahead of the tile you are currently tapping. This gives your hand time to travel to the correct position before the next dark tile arrives, preventing late misses.

Worked example

Reaching a personal best

  1. Start the game and tap only dark tiles, ignoring surrounding light tiles.
  2. Shift your gaze slightly above the tile you are tapping to preview the next dark tile's column.
  3. Keep your tapping hand relaxed; tension causes slower, less accurate movement.
  4. Maintain a consistent rhythm rather than rushing or pausing to recalibrate.

Gaze-ahead technique allows you to beat previous scores by reducing reaction delay.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Looking at the tile currently being tapped rather than the next tile coming down, causing late reactions.
  • Tapping with a stiff arm; use wrist and finger movement only for quick, precise taps.
  • Panicking at speed increases and mashing instead of maintaining deliberate, rhythmic taps.

Key terms

Dark tile
The tile you must tap; letting it scroll past without tapping ends the game.
Light tile
A tile you must never tap; touching it ends the game immediately.
Scroll speed
How fast tiles move down the screen; it increases as your score grows.

Frequently asked questions

What ends the game?
