How it works

This widget reads live network information directly from your browser using the Network Information API and measures round-trip latency to a lightweight endpoint. It displays your current connection type (Wi-Fi, cellular, Ethernet), effective speed tier (4G, 3G, etc.), and estimated downlink bandwidth without sending your data to any external service.

Signal quality is inferred from the effective connection type and round-trip time (RTT) reported by your browser. A low RTT and high downlink value indicate a strong, fast connection, while a high RTT suggests congestion or a weak signal.

Use this tool when troubleshooting slow loading pages, deciding whether to stream video, or confirming you switched from mobile data to Wi-Fi. Results reflect the connection active at the moment you load the page — refresh for an updated reading.

Worked example

Check whether you are on Wi-Fi or mobile data

  1. Open the tool on the device in question.
  2. Read the 'Connection Type' field — it shows wifi, cellular, or ethernet.
  3. Check the 'Effective Type' field to see the speed tier (e.g., 4g, 3g).
  4. Compare the displayed downlink value against your expected plan speed.

You can confirm the device is on Wi-Fi with a 4G-equivalent speed and low latency, or identify that it fell back to a slow cellular connection.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Refreshing once and treating the RTT reading as a permanent benchmark — network conditions fluctuate, so check multiple times for accuracy.
  • Confusing effective connection type with physical technology — a device on LTE may still show '3g' if the signal is poor.
  • Expecting the downlink figure to match an ISP speed test — this is an estimate from the browser, not a saturated download measurement.

Key terms

RTT (Round-Trip Time)
The time in milliseconds for a data packet to travel from your device to a server and back. Lower is better.
Downlink
