How it works
Math Duel is a 30-second mental arithmetic sprint. Arithmetic problems appear on screen one at a time — addition, subtraction, and multiplication — and you must type or select the correct answer as quickly as possible. Each correct answer scores a point; the clock keeps running regardless of whether you answer or skip. Your total correct answers in 30 seconds is your score.
The game targets mental math fluency: the ability to perform arithmetic operations quickly and accurately from memory rather than by working through steps. Regular practice moves basic arithmetic facts from effortful calculation into automatic recall, which frees up cognitive resources for harder problems in real-world contexts like mental budgeting, tip calculation, or data interpretation.
Difficulty is mixed randomly from the three operations. Multiplication of single and small double digits is typically the hardest for most adults because it depends on memorised times-table facts, while simple addition and subtraction can be computed quickly. Identifying which operation slows you down most is itself useful feedback.

Worked example
Maximise score in a 30-second round
- Start the timer. The first problem appears: 7 x 8.
- Recall the fact from memory: 56. Enter it immediately without computing step-by-step.
- The next problem: 43 + 29. Add the tens first (40+20=60), then the units (3+9=12), combine: 72.
- Continue as fast as accuracy allows. If a multiplication fact is not coming, skip or guess and move on — dwelling on one problem costs multiple easier ones.
- The timer ends; your correct-answer count is your score.
A score that improves with regular practice as arithmetic facts become automatic rather than computed.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Spending too long on a hard multiplication problem — if a times-table fact is not coming within one second, move to the next problem.
- Computing addition and subtraction digit-by-digit (e.g., counting up) instead of using chunking or number bonds — sequential counting is far too slow for a 30-second sprint.
- Not tracking which operation type causes the most slowdowns — identifying your weakest operation (often specific multiplication facts) and drilling those separately is the fastest path to score improvement.
