How it works

Memory Sequence flashes a series of numbers on screen, one at a time, and then asks you to type them back in order. Each successful round adds one more number to the sequence, progressively testing your digit-span working memory.

Digit span — the number of digits a person can immediately recall — averages around seven for adults, but varies with age, attention, and practice. Psychologists use digit-span tasks clinically to assess working memory capacity and detect cognitive change.

Strategies that measurably improve performance include grouping digits into pairs or triplets (chunking), sub-vocalizing the numbers as you see them (verbal rehearsal), and imposing a rhythm on the sequence as if it were a phone number. Active rehearsal during the display period, rather than passive watching, significantly extends how many digits you can hold.

This tool is useful as a quick self-assessment of working memory, a daily brain-training exercise, or a classroom demonstration of chunking and cognitive load.

Recall a 7-digit sequence using chunking

  1. Sequence flashes: 4, 7, 2, 9, 1, 6, 3.
