How it works
Memory Grid is a pattern recall game. At the start of each round, a subset of cells in a grid lights up for a brief period. Once the display goes dark, you must click the cells that were lit to reproduce the pattern from memory. Correct reproductions advance you to the next round, where the grid may grow larger or the pattern may show more lit cells.
The core skill is spatial working memory — the ability to hold a visual pattern in mind and recall precise locations. Strategies that help include chunking (grouping nearby lit cells into a shape like an L or a diagonal), counting the total number of lit cells before they disappear, and using edge or corner cells as anchors since they are easier to remember than interior positions.
Performance naturally degrades as patterns grow larger, which is normal. Research in cognitive psychology suggests that most people can accurately recall about four to seven spatial locations in short-term memory without practice. Regular play can extend this capacity over time.

Worked example
Recalling a five-cell pattern
- When the pattern appears, quickly count the lit cells — note there are five.
- Identify any shapes or clusters: for example, three in an L shape in the top-left and two isolated cells elsewhere.
- Mentally label the isolated cells by their row and column position.
- When the grid goes dark, first click the L-shape cluster from memory, then the two isolated cells.
- Submit your answer to check correctness.

- Trying to memorize each cell individually rather than grouping them into recognizable shapes or clusters.
- Clicking immediately after the pattern disappears without taking a moment to mentally rehearse the positions.
