Formula

Kilometers per Hour = Meters per Second × 3.6

km/h = m/s × 3.6

There are 1,000 metres in a kilometre and 3,600 seconds in an hour, so: km/h = m/s × (3600 ÷ 1000) = m/s × 3.6.

How it works

To convert m/s to km/h, scale the distance from metres to kilometres (÷ 1,000) and scale the time from seconds to hours (÷ 3,600). Combining both adjustments gives a net multiplier of 3,600 ÷ 1,000 = 3.6, so you simply multiply the m/s value by 3.6.

A common mistake is multiplying by 1,000 and dividing by 3,600 (i.e., using 0.2778) — that is the reverse conversion (km/h to m/s). Remember: km/h values are always larger than m/s values for the same speed, so the result should be bigger, not smaller.

Worked example

Convert 1 m/s to km/h

  1. Start with 1 m/s.
  2. Apply the combined unit scaling: 1 m/s × (3,600 s/h ÷ 1,000 m/km) = 1 × 3.6.
  3. No rounding needed.

1 m/s = 3.6 km/h

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Multiplying by 0.2778 (the km/h-to-m/s factor) instead of 3.6, producing a result much smaller than expected.
  • Forgetting the dimensional basis -- 1 m/s = 3600 m/h = 3.6 km/h; skipping the division-by-1000 step and leaving the result in m/h is a frequent error.
  • Confusing m/s with mph -- 10 m/s = 36 km/h, approximately 22.4 mph, not 10 mph.

Key terms

Meters per second (m/s)
The SI base unit of speed; the distance in metres an object travels in one second.
Kilometers per hour (km/h)
A speed unit expressing how many kilometres are covered in one hour. Commonly used for road speeds worldwide.
SI unit
Unit belonging to the International System of Units, the modern metric system. Metres per second is the SI derived unit for speed.
Unit scaling
The process of multiplying or dividing by ratios (like 1,000 m/km or 3,600 s/h) to change measurement units without altering the underlying quantity.

Frequently asked questions
