How to use this tool

  1. Enter pace — minutes and pace — seconds in the fields above.
  2. Results update instantly as you type — or click Calculate.
  3. Read your speed and the full breakdown beneath it.

Enter your running pace in minutes and seconds per kilometre to get your equivalent speed in km/h. Useful when comparing treadmill settings with outdoor running pace.

Formula

Speed (km/h) = 60 ÷ Pace (min/km)

Pace (decimal min/km) = Pace minutes + Pace seconds ÷ 60

How it works

Running pace (minutes per kilometre) and speed (kilometres per hour) are reciprocal measures: speed equals 60 divided by the decimal pace, because there are 60 minutes in an hour.

The calculator first converts the minutes-and-seconds pace entry to a decimal minute value, then applies the reciprocal relationship. The conversion is exact and assumes constant effort over a flat course.

Worked example

Worked example

  1. Pace entry: 5 min 30 sec.
  2. Decimal pace = 5 + 30 ÷ 60 = 5.5 min/km.
  3. Speed = 60 ÷ 5.5 ≈ 10.91 km/h.

Speed = 10.91 km/h; decimal pace = 5.5 min/km

Key terms

Pace (min/km)
The time a runner takes to cover one kilometre; the primary unit used in recreational running.
Speed (km/h)
Distance covered per hour; the reciprocal measure of pace, more commonly used in cycling and motorsport.
Reciprocal relationship
When two quantities multiply to a constant (here, pace × speed = 60), they are reciprocals of each other.
Decimal pace
Pace expressed as a single decimal number of minutes (e.g. 5.5 min/km) rather than minutes and seconds, for arithmetic convenience.
Constant-effort assumption
The conversion treats pace and speed as fixed values; in practice both vary with terrain, fatigue, and conditions.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert pace to speed?
Speed (km/h) = 60 ÷ pace (min/km). For example, 5:00/km = 60 ÷ 5 = 12 km/h.
How do I convert speed to pace?
Pace (min/km) = 60 ÷ speed (km/h). At 10 km/h, pace = 60 ÷ 10 = 6:00/km.
