How it works

The recommended viewing distance range is derived from the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) guideline that an ideal viewing angle spans roughly 30° (minimum distance) to 20° (maximum distance) of the horizontal field of view, which translates empirically to approximately 1.5× to 2.5× the screen diagonal. Inch values are converted to feet by dividing by 12 and to metres by multiplying by 0.0254. A common mistake is measuring viewing distance to the wall rather than to the screen surface itself — the distance should be from the viewer's eye level to the screen face, which matters particularly when the TV is mounted on or near a wall and a stand adds depth.

Recommended viewing distance for a 55-inch TV

  1. TV diagonal = 55 inches.
  2. Minimum distance: 55 × 1.5 = 82.5 in ÷ 12 = 6.875 ft; × 0.0254 = 2.0955 m.
  3. Maximum distance: 55 × 2.5 = 137.5 in ÷ 12 = 11.458 ft; × 0.0254 = 3.4925 m.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Sitting at the minimum distance formula (1.5x diagonal) for a 1080p TV -- the 1.5x rule assumes 4K resolution; for 1080p the recommended minimum is about 2x the diagonal to avoid seeing pixels.
  • Applying the same distance formula to 4:3 TVs as to 16:9 TVs -- the diagonal-to-width ratio differs; a 32-inch 4:3 TV is considerably narrower than a 32-inch 16:9 TV.
  • Measuring room depth but forgetting furniture placement -- the viewing distance is from the screen to the viewer eyes, not the back wall; a sofa placed 3 feet from the wall reduces effective room depth.
