Cycling Trip Time Calculator

Calculate how long a cycling trip will take based on distance and average cycling speed.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter the total route distance in kilometres.
  2. Enter your average cycling speed. Casual riders average 15–20 km/h; club cyclists 25–35 km/h.
  3. The calculator returns your ride time in hours and minutes.

Plan your cycling route by calculating the time needed based on distance and your riding speed.

Formula

Total time (h) = Distance (km) ÷ Average speed (km/h)

Hours = ⌊Total time⌋

Minutes = Round((Total time − Hours) × 60)

How it works

This calculator divides the trip distance by the cyclist's average speed to derive total travel time in decimal hours, then splits the result into whole hours and rounded minutes for readability. Average cycling speed depends on fitness level, bike type, terrain, and wind; recreational cyclists typically average 15–25 km/h on flat roads. The calculation assumes a constant average speed with no stops, so real-world journey times will generally be longer.

Worked example

Worked example

  1. Distance = 40 km; average cycling speed = 20 km/h.
  2. Total time = 40 ÷ 20 = 2.0 h.
  3. Hours = ⌊2.0⌋ = 2 h.
  4. Minutes = Round((2.0 − 2) × 60) = 0 min.

Cycling trip time = 2 h 0 min (2.0 h total)

Key terms

Average speed
Total distance divided by total moving time, smoothing over variations in pace due to hills, traffic, or effort.
Cadence
The number of pedal revolutions per minute; a higher cadence at a given gear generally reduces muscle fatigue.
Rolling resistance
The friction force between tyres and road surface that opposes forward motion; lower tyre pressure increases rolling resistance and slows average speed.
Watts per kilogram (W/kg)
A metric of cycling power-to-weight ratio used to compare fitness across riders of different sizes.
Strava segment
A defined stretch of road or trail on the Strava platform where riders' times are recorded and compared on a leaderboard.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average cycling speed?
Casual cyclists average 15–20 km/h (9–12 mph). Experienced road cyclists average 25–35 km/h. Racing cyclists can sustain 40+ km/h.
How long does it take to cycle 20 km?
At an average speed of 20 km/h, 20 km takes exactly 1 hour. At 15 km/h it takes 1 hour 20 minutes.
