Calculate someone's exact age (completed years) on any past or future date.

How it works

This tool calculates how old a person (or anything else with a birth or start date) will be on any specific past or future date. The age is expressed as completed years, matching the conventional way birthdays are counted.

Enter a date of birth and a target date. The tool computes the number of complete years that have elapsed between the two dates, applying the same logic used for birthday counting: a year is completed only when the anniversary day is reached or passed in the target year.

Use cases include verifying whether someone meets a minimum age requirement on a specific date (e.g., turning 18 before an election or enrollment deadline), calculating an age for an insurance application with a future effective date, or simply satisfying curiosity about how old a historical figure would be today.

The tool also shows the remaining months and days until the next birthday from the target date, so you can see exactly how close the person is to their next age milestone.

Worked example

Will a child be 13 before the school year starts?

  1. Enter date of birth: 2012-09-05
  2. Enter target date: 2025-09-01 (first day of school)
  3. Click Calculate
  4. Result: 12 years old -- they turn 13 four days later on September 5

Age on September 1, 2025: 12 years old

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Entering the target date instead of the date of birth in the birth date field, producing a nonsensical result.
  • Expecting the tool to count partial years -- it always returns completed years only.
  • Using a past target date without realizing the result will be less than the person's current age.

Key terms

Completed years
The number of full years elapsed since birth; a year is only counted as complete once the anniversary date is reached.
Target date
The specific date for which you want to know the calculated age, which can be in the past or the future.

Frequently asked questions

What does 'age' mean here?
Age is the number of completed years — the same way birthdays are counted. Extra months and days show the remainder beyond whole years.
Can I calculate a future age?
Yes — set the target date to any future date to see how old someone will be then.
