How it works
The Sentence Counter splits your text at sentence-ending punctuation — periods, exclamation marks, and question marks — and returns the total sentence count. It handles common abbreviations (e.g., 'Dr.', 'U.S.') gracefully to avoid false splits.
Knowing your sentence count helps you assess readability. A high ratio of words to sentences indicates long, complex sentences that may be hard to follow; a low ratio suggests short, punchy writing. Aim for an average of 15-20 words per sentence for general audiences.
This tool is useful for writers, editors, and students checking that an essay or report has varied sentence structure and does not rely too heavily on either extremely short or extremely long sentences.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Pasting text that uses only line breaks (no punctuation) as sentence separators — these will not be counted as separate sentences.
- Including headings or titles that lack terminal punctuation, which lowers the sentence count artificially.
- Expecting abbreviations like 'Dr.' or 'vs.' to be counted as sentence endings — the tool skips common abbreviations.

- Does it count sentences in bulleted lists?

- An ellipsis (...) is treated as a sentence break, so a sentence ending with an ellipsis counts as one sentence.
- What about dialogue with quoted speech?
- Quoted sentences that end with a period or question mark inside quotes are counted normally.
