Estimate how long it takes to read your article or blog post at an average reading speed.
How it works
This estimator calculates how many minutes a typical reader will need to finish your article or blog post. It splits your text into words and divides by your chosen reading speed in words per minute (WPM). The default speed of 200-250 WPM reflects average adult silent reading; you can raise it toward 300 WPM for a tech-savvy audience or lower it for dense academic prose.
Paste the full body of your content into the Text field and enter a WPM value. The tool returns a time in minutes, rounded to the nearest half-minute so you can display it naturally (for example, 'About 4 min read').
Publishing platforms such as Medium popularised read-time estimates because they set reader expectations and reduce bounce rate. Editors also use them to balance article length across a content calendar. The estimate is intentionally conservative — code blocks, tables, and images add cognitive load not captured by pure word count.
Worked example
Estimate read time for a 900-word blog post
- Paste the article body (approximately 900 words) into the Text field.
- Set Reading speed to 225 WPM (default average).
- The tool divides 900 by 225.
- Read the result: about 4 minutes.
~4 min read
Common mistakes to avoid
- Pasting HTML source instead of plain text — tags inflate the word count significantly.
- Using a WPM that is too high for the actual audience, making the displayed read time feel unrealistically short.
- Forgetting to include footnotes or captions that readers will also read.
Key terms
- Words per minute (WPM)
- The number of words a person reads in one minute. Average adult silent reading is roughly 200-250 WPM.
- Read time
- An estimate of the total minutes needed to read a piece of content from start to finish at a given WPM.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the average adult reading speed?
- Research suggests the average adult reads 238 words per minute for non-fiction digital content (Brysbaert et al., 2019). Adjust the WPM field for your audience.
- Does read time affect SEO?
- Longer content often ranks better, but quality matters more than length. Displaying read time reduces bounce rate by setting reader expectations.
