Place Value Builder
Tap thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones blocks to build a target number and see exactly how place value composes it. A live readout shows the running total and the expanded form as you build.

How to play
- Read the target number shown at the top of the tool.
- Tap the Thousands, Hundreds, Tens, or Ones tile to add that block to the build area, watching the running total update live.
- Tap any block already placed in the build area to remove it if your total goes too high.
- Tap Check My Build once your total matches the target, or tap New Target to try a fresh number.
A target number appears at the top, and your job is to build it from base-10 blocks: tap the thousands, hundreds, tens, or ones tile to drop a block of that size into the build area below. A live readout tracks your running total and its expanded form as you go, so you can see exactly how 1 thousand block, 2 hundreds blocks, 3 tens blocks, and 4 ones blocks add up to 1,234. Tap any block already in the build area to remove it if you overshoot, or tap Clear Blocks to start that number over. Because there's more than one correct way to build most numbers, regrouping ten ones into a ten or ten tens into a hundred works too, since the tool always checks your total rather than a fixed block count, so it welcomes true place-value reasoning instead of one memorized answer.
Frequently asked questions
- Does every number have only one correct way to build it?
- No. The tool checks whether your blocks add up to the target total, not whether you used the exact minimum number of blocks, so building 40 as four tens or as three tens and ten ones are both accepted since they both equal 40.
- What range of numbers can appear as a target?
- Targets are whole numbers from 1 up to 9,999, and every single one of them is buildable using the thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones blocks provided, since you can always stack enough of one block type alone to reach any target in that range.
- What happens if I add too many blocks and go over the target?
- The readout below the build area keeps showing your running total and expanded form live, so you'll see immediately if you've gone over. Tap any block in the build area to remove it, or tap Clear Blocks to start fresh.
