Water cost ($) = total usage (m³) × rate ($/m³)

How it works

This calculator estimates a water bill by first converting daily litre consumption over a billing period into cubic metres (the standard billing unit), then multiplying by the utility's volumetric rate per cubic metre.

The calculation assumes a flat volumetric tariff with no fixed service charge, tiered pricing, or sewerage component. Actual bills typically include additional fixed charges; check your utility statement for the full tariff structure.

Worked example

  1. Daily usage: 200 L/day. Billing period: 30 days. Rate: $2.50/m³.
  2. Total usage = 200 × 30 = 6,000 L = 6,000 ÷ 1,000 = 6.0 m³.
  3. Water cost = 6.0 m³ × $2.50/m³ = $15.00.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Entering usage in litres per month but days as 30 — if your utility bills bi-monthly (60 days), using 30 days halves the estimated cost.
  • Using a flat rate when the utility applies a tiered tariff — the first 5 m3 may cost less than subsequent cubic metres, so a blended rate gives a more accurate result.
  • Confusing litres with cubic metres on the water meter reading — 1 m3 = 1000 L, so misreading the meter overstates consumption by 1000x.
