How it works
This calculator converts daily round-trip mileage into a per-day fuel expense using vehicle efficiency and the current gas price, then scales it up to yearly and multi-year totals based on working days.
Only direct fuel costs are modelled; wear-and-tear, insurance, and parking are not included, so the true cost of commuting is higher than shown.

- Using only fuel cost and ignoring the IRS mileage rate components: depreciation, maintenance, and tire wear add roughly $0.25-0.35 per mile beyond fuel.
- Applying the round-trip distance to only 5 days per week without adjusting for hybrid schedules, vacation days, or remote-work weeks.
- Forgetting parking fees, tolls, and bridge costs, which can exceed fuel cost in urban areas.
