The factor 0.04 kcal/step is the empirical estimate for a 70 kg person; the formula scales linearly with body weight.
How it works
The calculator uses an empirical rule of thumb: a 70 kg person burns approximately 0.04 kcal per step. For other body weights the rate scales proportionally — a 140 kg person burns twice as much per step. Multiplying this rate by the total step count gives the estimated total calories burned. The chart also plots calories at common step milestones up to 1.5× your goal.
Common mistake: This formula estimates net calories from walking motion only and does not account for elevation, pace, terrain, or fitness level. Applying this number as an exact calorie deficit without considering those factors can lead to overestimating energy expenditure and underestimating food intake needed for recovery.

Estimate calories burned for a 70 kg person hitting a 10,000-step goal
- Body weight = 70 kg, step goal = 10,000 steps.
- Calculate calories per step: 70 × 0.04 / 70 = 0.04 kcal/step.
- Multiply by step goal: 0.04 × 10,000 = 400 kcal.
400 kcal — a 70 kg person burns approximately 400 kcal by completing 10,000 steps.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Entering body weight in pounds instead of kilograms — the formula uses kg, so lbs inputs overstate calories burned by a factor of ~2.2.
- Assuming the linear estimate is precise across all step counts — calories per step vary with walking speed, stride length, and terrain, so the chart is an approximation calibrated near 3 mph on flat ground.
- Adding step-burn calories to TDEE without recognizing that TDEE already includes activity calories if a non-sedentary multiplier was used, causing double-counting.
