How it works

This calculator works backward from a desired wake-up time to suggest a bedtime that aligns with a whole number of 90-minute sleep cycles, adding a 15-minute allowance for the time it typically takes to fall asleep after getting into bed. Each complete cycle covers light sleep, deep sleep, and REM sleep stages.

The 90-minute cycle length is an average; individual cycles vary from roughly 70 to 110 minutes and lengthen toward morning. The 15-minute sleep-onset figure is typical for healthy adults but may differ if you are sleep-deprived or have a sleep disorder.

Worked example

  1. Input: wake-up time = 07:00 (= 420 minutes from midnight), sleep cycles = 5.
  2. Total time needed: 5 × 90 + 15 = 465 minutes.
  3. Bedtime in minutes from midnight: 420 − 465 = −45; apply modulo 1440: (−45 + 1440) = 1395 minutes.
  4. Convert 1395 minutes: 1395 ÷ 60 = 23 hours 15 minutes = 23:15.

Bedtime: 23:15; sleep duration: 7.5 h

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Ignoring the 15-minute fall-asleep buffer and setting the alarm to exactly N x 90 minutes before bedtime, which tends to interrupt the first sleep cycle before it completes.
  • Assuming exactly 90-minute cycles for everyone — sleep cycle length varies from about 70 to 120 minutes, so the calculator gives a useful approximation, not a guaranteed alarm time.
  • Choosing 6 cycles (9 hours) when 4 or 5 cycles (6 or 7.5 hours) at consistent times produce better sleep quality than a longer irregular schedule.
