How to use this tool

  1. Enter the patio dimensions in feet.
  2. Enter the paver size in inches.
  3. Add a 10% waste allowance (15% for patterns).
  4. The calculator returns patio area and total pavers needed.

Estimate the number of pavers needed for your patio, path, or driveway project.

Formula

Patio area = length × width (ft²)

Paver area = (paver_length ÷ 12) × (paver_width ÷ 12) (ft²)

Pavers needed = ⌈(patio_area ÷ paver_area) × (1 + waste% ÷ 100)⌉

How it works

The calculator finds the total patio area in square feet, then divides by the area of a single paver (converted from inches to feet) to get the theoretical count. A waste percentage is applied before rounding up to a whole number to account for cuts at the edges, breakage during installation, and future repairs.

This method assumes a rectangular patio and uniform paver size with no gaps or mortar joints included in the paver dimensions; if pavers are to be laid with sand joints, the joint width is typically small enough that its effect on count is negligible.

Worked example

Worked example

  1. Patio area = 16 × 12 = 192 ft².
  2. Paver area = (12 ÷ 12) × (6 ÷ 12) = 1.0 × 0.5 = 0.5 ft² per paver.
  3. Base count = 192 ÷ 0.5 = 384 pavers.
  4. With 10% waste: 384 × 1.10 = 422.4, rounded up to 423 pavers.

Pavers needed: 423

Key terms

Paver
A pre-made unit of brick, concrete, or natural stone used to surface outdoor areas such as patios, walkways, and driveways.
Waste allowance
Extra pavers ordered beyond the theoretical count to cover cuts at edges, breakage during cutting or laying, and replacements needed in future repairs.
Bond pattern
The arrangement in which pavers are laid — running bond, herringbone, or basketweave. Diagonal or herringbone patterns increase waste because more edge cuts are needed.
Base course
The compacted gravel and sand sub-base beneath pavers that provides drainage and stability. Not included in paver quantity but essential to the installation.
Paver density
The number of pavers per square foot, equal to 1 ÷ paver area. Useful for quick mental checks when ordering.

Frequently asked questions

How many pavers do I need for a patio?
Divide the patio area (ft²) by the area of one paver (ft²), then add 10% for waste. For example, a 192 ft² patio using 12×6 inch pavers needs about 423 pieces.
What size base do I need under pavers?
Lay a 4–6 inch compacted gravel base, then a 1-inch sand screed layer. This provides drainage and a level surface for paver installation.
