How to use this tool

  1. Enter your airline's checked baggage weight limit in kg.
  2. Enter your bag's current packed weight in kg.
  3. The calculator shows remaining allowance in both kg and lbs and the percentage used.

Check how much of your baggage weight allowance you have left before heading to the airport.

Formula

Remaining (kg) = Allowance (kg) − Packed weight (kg)

Remaining (lbs) = Remaining (kg) × 2.20462

Allowance used (%) = Packed weight ÷ Allowance × 100

How it works

This calculator subtracts the current packed bag weight from the airline baggage allowance to reveal how much spare capacity remains, expressed in both kilograms and pounds. The kg-to-lbs conversion uses the exact factor 2.20462. Percentage utilisation is computed to help travellers quickly judge how close they are to the limit. Accuracy depends on the user entering the correct allowance for their specific ticket and fare class, as allowances vary by airline, route, and booking class.

Worked example

Worked example

  1. Allowance = 23 kg; packed bag weight = 15 kg.
  2. Remaining = 23 − 15 = 8 kg.
  3. Remaining in lbs = 8 × 2.20462 = 17.64 lbs.
  4. Allowance used = 15 ÷ 23 × 100 = 65.22%.

Remaining allowance = 8.00 kg (17.64 lbs); allowance used = 65.22%

Frequently asked questions

What is the standard checked baggage allowance?
Most economy class tickets include 20–23 kg (44–51 lbs) per checked bag. Business and first class typically allow 32 kg. Always check your specific airline's policy.
What happens if my bag is overweight?
Airlines charge excess baggage fees, which can be significant — often $50–$200 per bag per flight for bags over the limit. Weigh your bag at home to avoid airport surprises.
