Crypto Market Cap Calculator
Calculate a cryptocurrency's market capitalisation from its price and circulating supply.
How to use this tool
- Enter the current price per token in dollars.
- Enter the circulating supply (not total or max supply).
- Read the market capitalisation in dollars and in billions.
Market cap = price × circulating supply. It is the most common measure of a cryptocurrency's size and is used to rank coins on aggregators like CoinGecko and CoinMarketCap.
Formula
Market Cap ($) = Token Price ($) × Circulating Supply (tokens)
Market Cap (B$) = Market Cap ($) ÷ 109
How it works
Market capitalisation is calculated by multiplying the current token price by the total number of tokens in circulating supply, following the same convention used by major crypto data aggregators such as CoinMarketCap and CoinGecko. This figure represents the total market value of all tokens currently available to trade and excludes locked, reserved, or unissued supply. Market cap is a snapshot metric and changes continuously as price or reported circulating supply changes.
Worked example
Worked example
- Token price = $50,000 (e.g. Bitcoin at that price); circulating supply = 19,000,000 tokens.
- Market cap = $50,000 × 19,000,000 = $950,000,000,000.
- Convert to billions: $950,000,000,000 ÷ 10⁹ = $950 billion.
Market cap = $950,000,000,000 ($950 billion)
Key terms
- Market capitalisation
- The total market value of a cryptocurrency's circulating supply, calculated as price × circulating supply.
- Circulating supply
- The number of tokens currently available and trading in the open market, excluding locked or reserved tokens.
- Token price
- The current market price of a single unit of a cryptocurrency.
- Fully diluted valuation (FDV)
- Market cap calculated using total maximum supply rather than circulating supply; gives the theoretical ceiling valuation.
- Large-cap / small-cap
- Common classifications of crypto assets by market cap size, analogous to equity market terminology.
Frequently asked questions
- What is market cap?
- Market capitalisation is the total value of all coins currently in circulation: price × circulating supply. It measures the relative size of a cryptocurrency.
- Why use circulating supply instead of total supply?
- Circulating supply represents tokens actually available to the market. Total or max supply includes tokens that may be locked, unvested, or not yet minted, which would overstate market cap.
