Calculate your actual crypto profit after accounting for exchange trading fees on both the buy and sell side. Not financial advice.

Formula

Gross profit = (Sell price − Buy price) × Amount

Total fees = Buy value × fee% + Sell value × fee%

Net profit = Gross profit − Total fees

Net profit (%) = Net profit ÷ (Buy price × Amount) × 100

How it works

This calculator works out the actual profit or loss from a spot crypto trade by subtracting both the entry and exit trading fees from the gross price gain. The buy fee is applied to the initial purchase value, and the sell fee is applied to the proceeds, reflecting how most exchanges charge a percentage of each transaction.

Net profit percentage is relative to the total capital deployed at purchase, giving a true cost-adjusted return. Zero-fee inputs produce the gross return only.

Worked example

Worked example: buy 0.5 BTC at $30,000, sell at $45,000, no fees

  1. Buy value = $30,000 × 0.5 = $15,000; sell value = $45,000 × 0.5 = $22,500.
  2. Trading fee = 0%, so total fees = $0.
  3. Gross profit = $22,500 − $15,000 = $7,500.
  4. Net profit = $7,500 − $0 = $7,500.
  5. Net profit (%) = $7,500 ÷ $15,000 × 100 = 50%.

Net profit: $7,500 (50%) on a $15,000 investment.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Omitting fees from both the buy and sell sides -- on a $10,000 trade with 0.1% fees per side, $20 in fees reduces a $50 gross profit by 40%; small-margin trades are especially sensitive to fee omission.
  • Using the spot price at time of entry without accounting for slippage on large orders -- a $100,000 market buy moves the price against you; the actual average fill price is higher than the quoted spot price.
  • Not accounting for tax events -- each sell is typically a taxable event; calculating profit without noting the cost basis per lot ignores the tax liability that reduces the effective net gain.

Frequently asked questions

Why do fees matter so much in crypto?
Fees apply on both the buy and sell side. On a small move, fees can eliminate your profit or deepen a loss. Always factor them in when setting profit targets.
What is a typical crypto trading fee?
Major exchanges charge 0.05–0.1% per trade for maker/taker orders. Some platforms offer 0% fees on select pairs. Check your exchange's fee schedule before trading.
