Fuel consumption (L/100km) = Litres used ÷ Distance (km) × 100

L/100km = litres / distance × 100

How it works

This calculator measures fuel efficiency by dividing the total volume of fuel consumed (in litres) by the distance driven (in kilometres), then multiplying by 100 to express the result per 100 km — the standard fuel economy unit used in most countries outside the United States.

The result reflects real-world consumption for the trip entered; it assumes the litres and distance values accurately represent the same journey (e.g., filling up at the start and end of a measured trip). No adjustments are made for driving style, terrain, or fuel type.

Worked example

  1. Distance driven: 500 km. Fuel used: 40 L.
  2. Divide fuel by distance: 40 ÷ 500 = 0.08 L/km.
  3. Multiply by 100 to convert to per-100 km basis: 0.08 × 100 = 8.0 L/100km.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Entering distance in miles instead of kilometres — 1 mile = 1.609 km, so the error inflates or deflates consumption by 60%.
  • Reading litres from the fuel gauge estimate rather than the pump meter — fuel gauge accuracy is typically plus or minus 10%.
