How to use this tool

  1. Enter the total tile area in square feet.
  2. Enter tile size (average side length in inches) and grout joint width.
  3. Enter the tile thickness in inches.
  4. The result shows how many pounds of grout to purchase.

Calculate exactly how much grout to buy for your tile project before heading to the store.

Formula

Coverage factor = tile_size² ÷ ((tile_size + joint_width) × joint_width × tile_thickness)

Grout needed (lbs) = (area × 144) ÷ coverage factor

How it works

The calculator converts the tiled area to square inches (× 144), then divides by a coverage factor derived from the tile geometry. The coverage factor represents how many square inches of floor one pound of grout fills, and is derived from the ratio of solid tile area to the volume of the grout joints — a standard industry approach used by grout manufacturers.

This formula assumes unsanded grout density conventions and square tiles; actual consumption may vary with grout brand, joint depth, and application technique, so purchasing 10–15% extra is advisable.

Worked example

Worked example

  1. Tile area in ft² = 50; converted to in² = 50 × 144 = 7,200 in².
  2. Coverage factor = 12² ÷ ((12 + 0.25) × 0.25 × 0.375) = 144 ÷ (12.25 × 0.25 × 0.375) = 144 ÷ 1.1484375 ≈ 125.39.
  3. Grout needed = 7,200 ÷ 125.39 ≈ 57.42 lbs.

Grout needed: 57.42 lbs

Key terms

Grout joint
The gap left between adjacent tiles that is filled with grout. Its width and depth directly determine how much grout is required.
Coverage factor
A derived value representing the tile area (in²) that one pound of mixed grout can fill, accounting for joint width, joint depth, and tile size.
Sanded vs. unsanded grout
Sanded grout contains fine sand for strength and is used for joints wider than 1/8 in. Unsanded grout is smoother and suited for narrower joints or delicate tile surfaces.
Tile thickness
The depth of the tile, which equals the depth of the grout joint and therefore affects how much grout volume must be filled.
Joint width
The horizontal gap between tiles, set by spacers during installation. Wider joints consume significantly more grout.

Frequently asked questions

How much grout do I need per square foot?
Grout quantity depends on tile size, joint width, and tile thickness. As a rough guide, 12×12 tiles with 1/4-inch joints need about 1.1–1.3 lbs of grout per square foot.
What type of grout should I use?
Use sanded grout for joints wider than 1/8 inch. Use unsanded (non-sanded) grout for joints 1/8 inch or narrower. Epoxy grout is available for both.
