Formula

Grade Needed = (Target Grade − Current Grade × (1 − w)) ÷ w

where w = Final Exam Weight ÷ 100.

How it works

This calculator determines the minimum score required on a final exam to achieve a desired overall grade, given the student's current standing and the exam's percentage weight in the course.

It solves the weighted-average equation algebraically: the overall grade is modelled as Current Grade × (1 − w) + Final Score × w, and the formula rearranges this to isolate the unknown final score. Scores above 100 % indicate the target is mathematically unreachable with the remaining work; scores below 0 % mean the target is already guaranteed.

Worked example

  1. Current grade = 80 %, target grade = 90 %, final exam weight = 50 %.
  2. Convert weight to decimal: w = 50 ÷ 100 = 0.50.
  3. Portion already locked in: 80 × (1 − 0.50) = 80 × 0.50 = 40.
  4. Points still needed from the final: 90 − 40 = 50.
  5. Required final score: 50 ÷ 0.50 = 100 %.

Grade needed on the final exam = 100 %.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Entering the final exam weight as a decimal (e.g., 0.25) instead of a percentage (25), which makes the divisor tiny and produces a wildly inflated needed grade.
  • Using the weighted average of all other grades as the current grade without confirming the instructor calculates it the same way.
  • Overlooking extra-credit opportunities that could change the target grade and reduce the needed final exam score.

Key terms

Exam weight
The proportion of the final course grade attributed to a single assessment, expressed as a percentage.
Current grade
The weighted average of all graded work completed before the final exam.
Target grade
The minimum overall course grade the student wants to achieve.
Weighted average
An average in which each component contributes in proportion to its assigned weight rather than equally.
Grade needed > 100 %
An outcome indicating the target overall grade is no longer achievable, because even a perfect final exam score would be insufficient.

Frequently asked questions

What if the grade I need is over 100%?
It means the final exam alone cannot save your grade to that target. You would need to negotiate extra credit with the instructor or adjust your target grade downward.
How do I find my current weighted grade?
Multiply each graded component by its weight percentage, sum those products, and divide by the sum of weights already graded. Your syllabus lists the weight for each category.
Does this formula work if the final exam replaces my lowest test grade?
Not directly. You need to first calculate your current grade under both scenarios (with and without the replacement), then plug the better number in as your current grade.
