Common mistakes to avoid

  • Including planned leave (vacation, public holidays) in the days absent count — absence percentage measures unplanned absences only; mixing in approved leave inflates the metric and misrepresents the underlying attendance problem.
  • Using calendar days as the denominator instead of scheduled workdays — dividing by 365 dramatically lowers the percentage and obscures the true share of missed work shifts.
  • Aggregating absence data across departments with very different shift patterns without normalising — a team working 4-day weeks has fewer scheduled days per year, so the same number of absent days produces a higher percentage than for a 5-day team.
