Shape Match
Match pairs of coloured shapes in the fewest moves. A twist on classic memory for all ages.
How to play
- Click any card to flip it and reveal the coloured shape inside.
- Click a second card — if both shapes and colours match, they stay revealed.
- If they don't match, both flip back after a moment — remember their positions!
- Find all pairs in the fewest moves to win.
Flip cards to find matching shape pairs. Easy has 12 cards (6 pairs), Hard has 16 cards (8 pairs). Use your memory to find matches quickly!
How it works
Shape Match is a memory-matching game where a grid of face-down cards conceals pairs of coloured shapes. Flip two cards at a time; if they match, the pair is removed. If they do not match, both cards flip back face-down.
The goal is to clear the entire board in as few total moves as possible. Because cards return face-down after a failed flip, remembering the positions of shapes you have already revealed is the key skill the game tests.
Unlike purely shape-based matching games, Shape Match adds a colour dimension so two circles are only a valid pair if they share the same colour. This extra attribute keeps difficulty meaningful even on smaller grids.
The game is suitable for all ages and works entirely in the browser with no installation. It is a popular mental warm-up and is often used in educational settings to demonstrate memory improvement through attention and repetition.
Worked example
Clearing a 4x4 grid efficiently
- Flip two unknown cards to begin revealing their shapes and colours.
- If they do not match, note both positions carefully before they flip back.
- On the next turn flip one unknown card; if it matches a position you already memorised, flip that known card as your second choice.
- As the board empties, use memory of revealed-but-unmatched cards to close out pairs quickly.
Board cleared in close to the minimum possible moves by converting memory into guaranteed matches.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Flipping cards too quickly without pausing to commit their positions to memory before they flip back.
- Focusing only on shape and ignoring colour, leading to selecting cards that look similar but are different colours.
- Randomly flipping cards late in the game when most positions are already known, wasting guaranteed matches.
