Daily cost ($) = (cigarettes per day ÷ cigarettes per pack) × pack price

Annual cost ($) = daily cost × 365

Total cost ($) = daily cost × 365 × years

How it works

This tool calculates the direct purchase cost of cigarettes by converting a daily consumption count into a daily spend using the cost-per-cigarette from a known pack price and pack size, then accumulates that spend over the specified number of years. It models cost as fixed over time — it does not account for price inflation, tax increases, or health-related costs such as insurance premiums or medical bills. The resulting figure represents a conservative lower bound on the true financial impact of smoking.

Worked example

  1. 20 cigarettes/day, pack price $10, 20 cigarettes/pack, 10 years.
  2. Daily cost = 20 ÷ 20 × $10 = $10.00 per day.
  3. Year 1 cost = $10 × 365 = $3,650.
  4. Total over 10 years = $10 × 365 × 10 = $36,500.

Daily cost $10.00; Year 1 cost $3,650; total cost over 10 years $36,500.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using today's pack price for a multi-decade projection without applying tobacco price inflation (historically 6-8% per year due to tax increases), substantially understating long-term cost.
  • Assuming 20 cigarettes per pack when premium or international packs sometimes contain 25, underestimating daily pack consumption and total cost.
  • Ignoring downstream health and insurance cost savings when evaluating quitting financially — the chart shows only the direct purchase cost, not the full economic impact.
