Formula

Hourly Wage = Annual Salary ÷ (Hours per Week × 52)

How it works

This calculator converts a gross annual salary into an equivalent hourly rate by dividing the yearly figure by the total hours worked in a year, calculated as weekly hours multiplied by 52 weeks.

The result is a pre-tax hourly equivalent and assumes the employee works every week of the year with no unpaid leave. Salaried employees who receive paid time off are effectively earning a slightly higher effective rate during weeks they work, which this formula does not capture.

Worked example

  1. Annual salary = $52,000; hours per week = 40.
  2. Total annual hours = 40 × 52 = 2,080 hours.
  3. Hourly wage = $52,000 ÷ 2,080 = $25.00.

Hourly wage = $25.00.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using 50 weeks per year instead of 52, understating the hourly rate by ~4% — the standard divisor assumes all 52 weeks are paid.
  • Forgetting to subtract unpaid leave: if your salary includes two unpaid weeks, divide by (hours/week x 50) instead of 52 for a true hourly equivalent.
  • Confusing gross salary with take-home pay — the calculator uses pre-tax salary; the true after-tax hourly rate is significantly lower.

Hourly wage
The equivalent amount earned per hour of work, derived from a salaried figure.
Annualisation
The process of scaling a rate (hourly, weekly, monthly) up to a full-year equivalent, or vice versa.

Earnings before taxes, benefits, and other deductions are subtracted.
Full-time equivalent (FTE)

Frequently asked questions

What is $60,000 per year in hourly wage at 40 hrs/week?
$60,000 / (40 x 52) = $60,000 / 2,080 = approximately $28.85/hr.
Does this calculation account for overtime?
No — the formula uses your standard hours per week. If your total annual hours (including overtime) differ, enter the actual total weekly average to get a more accurate hourly rate.
How do I convert hourly to annual salary?
Multiply hourly rate by hours per week and by 52. Example: $25/hr x 40 hrs x 52 weeks = $52,000/year.
