In environmental and analytical chemistry, ppm (parts per million) is typically expressed as mg/L for aqueous solutions (because 1 L of water ≈ 1 kg = 10⁶ mg). ppm = mg solute ÷ L solution. ppb = µg/L = ppm × 1000.

For education only.

Formula

PPM (mg/L) = Solute mass (mg) ÷ Solution volume (L)

PPB (µg/L) = PPM × 1000

g/L = Solute mass (mg) ÷ 1000 ÷ Solution volume (L)

How it works

This calculator converts a known solute mass in milligrams dissolved in a known volume of solution in litres into three common concentration units: parts per million (mg/L), parts per billion (µg/L), and grams per litre. The equivalence ppm = mg/L holds exactly for dilute aqueous solutions because water density is approximately 1 kg/L. Results assume a homogeneous solution and do not account for volume change on mixing.

Worked example

Worked example

  1. Solute mass = 5.0 mg, solution volume = 1.0 L.
  2. PPM = 5.0 mg ÷ 1.0 L = 5.0 mg/L.
  3. PPB = 5.0 × 1000 = 5000 µg/L.
  4. g/L = 5.0 mg ÷ 1000 ÷ 1.0 L = 0.005 g/L.

Concentration = 5.0 ppm (mg/L), 5000 ppb (µg/L), 0.005 g/L.

Key terms

PPM (parts per million)
A concentration unit equal to milligrams of solute per litre of solution (mg/L) for dilute aqueous solutions.
PPB (parts per billion)
One thousandth of a ppm; equal to micrograms of solute per litre (µg/L).
Solute
The substance dissolved in a solution, present in the smaller amount.
Solvent
The liquid in which the solute is dissolved; water in most aqueous contexts.
Dilute solution
A solution with a very small solute-to-solvent ratio, where density approximates that of pure solvent.

Frequently asked questions

What does ppm mean?
Parts per million: 1 ppm = 1 mg per litre in dilute aqueous solutions. It can also mean 1 mg per kg (mg/kg) in solid mixtures — the context matters.
When are ppb values used?
Parts per billion (ppb = µg/L) are used for trace contaminants in drinking water, air quality, and toxicology where concentrations are extremely low.
