Formula
Pet BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)2
Where height in cm is converted to metres: height (m) = height (cm) ÷ 100.
Body condition: < 15 = Underweight; 15–25 = Healthy weight; 25–35 = Overweight; > 35 = Obese.
How it works
This calculator applies the standard body mass index formula — weight divided by the square of height — to dogs, using shoulder height (withers height) as the height measurement. The thresholds (15, 25, 35) are adapted reference ranges for canines rather than the human BMI thresholds, reflecting differences in body proportions between species.
Pet BMI is an informal screening tool and should not replace a veterinarian's body condition score (BCS) assessment, which evaluates rib coverage, waist definition, and abdominal tuck. Breed-specific body composition varies significantly, so these thresholds are approximate guidelines for mixed-breed or typical-conformation dogs.
Worked example
Worked example: 12 kg dog, 70 cm shoulder height
- Convert height to metres: 70 cm ÷ 100 = 0.70 m.
- Square the height: 0.70² = 0.49 m².
- Divide weight by height squared: 12 ÷ 0.49 ≈ 24.49.
- 24.49 falls between 15 and 25, so body condition = Healthy weight.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Entering height at the shoulder in inches instead of centimetres — 1 inch = 2.54 cm, so a 20-inch-tall dog entered as 20 cm appears much shorter and skews the BMI drastically.
- Applying the human BMI thresholds to pets — the healthy range for this dog BMI tool (15-25) is completely different from the human scale (18.5-24.9).
- Relying solely on BMI without a hands-on body condition score — rib visibility and feel provide additional diagnostic information that a single number cannot capture.
