How it works
This calculator expresses one number as a proportion of another and scales it to a percentage out of 100. It divides the part by the total, then multiplies by 100 — a direct implementation of the standard percentage formula. The result is accurate for any numeric inputs; note that if Total is 0 the result is undefined.
Worked example
- Part = 25, Total = 200.
- Divide: 25 ÷ 200 = 0.125.
- Multiply by 100: 0.125 × 100 = 12.5.
25 is 12.5% of 200.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Swapping part and total, dividing total by part and getting a number greater than 100% when part is smaller than total.
- Forgetting to multiply by 100 and returning the raw decimal ratio (e.g. 0.25) instead of the percentage (25%).
- Using this formula to find percentage increase, which requires (new - old) / old × 100, not part / total × 100.
