Human age equivalent = 16 × ln(dog age) + 31

Where ln is the natural logarithm. For a 5-year-old dog: 16 × ln(5) + 31 ≈ 56.75 human years.

How it works

This calculator converts a dog's chronological age to an approximate human-equivalent age using a logarithmic formula derived from DNA methylation research (Trey Ideker, UC San Diego, 2019). Unlike the old "multiply by 7" rule, this formula reflects the fact that dogs mature very rapidly in their first two years and then age more slowly relative to humans.

The formula is applied to any dog age greater than zero and produces a continuous estimate. It is calibrated primarily on Labrador Retrievers; actual aging rate varies by breed size, with larger breeds generally having shorter lifespans. Treat the result as an informative estimate rather than a clinical measurement.

Worked example: 5-year-old dog

  2. Compute the natural logarithm: ln(5) ≈ 1.6094.
  3. Multiply by 16: 16 × 1.6094 ≈ 25.75.
  4. Add 31: 25.75 + 31 = 56.75.

A 5-year-old dog is equivalent to approximately 56.75 human years.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using the old '1 dog year = 7 human years' rule — the logarithmic formula shows dogs age rapidly in their first two years and more slowly thereafter.
  • Applying the formula to puppies under 1 year, where ln(0) is undefined — the formula is calibrated for dogs aged 1 and older.
  • Assuming the conversion is the same for all breeds — large breeds age faster than small breeds, so the formula is a general approximation, not breed-specific.
