A distraction-free online notepad that automatically saves your text to your browser's local storage. No account needed, no upload.

How it works

The Online Notepad is a minimal, distraction-free writing area that saves everything you type automatically to your browser's localStorage. Your text persists between sessions in the same browser on the same device — close the tab, reopen it, and your notes are still there.

Because storage is local to your browser, no account or internet connection is needed to save and retrieve notes. This also means your text stays entirely private: nothing is uploaded, and no third party can access your notes.

The notepad is ideal for quick, temporary captures — jotting an idea during a meeting, drafting a message before pasting it elsewhere, or keeping a running to-do list during a work session. For permanent or multi-device storage, copy the text to a dedicated notes app or document.

A 'Clear' button wipes the notepad when you are done, and a 'Copy All' button lets you grab the full text in one click. The word and character count at the bottom updates in real time.

Worked example

Use the notepad as a clipboard buffer during research

  1. Open the Online Notepad in a browser tab.
  2. As you browse, paste interesting quotes and URLs into the notepad.
  3. The text saves automatically — no need to press anything.
  4. When done researching, click 'Copy All' and paste into your document.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Treating the notepad as permanent long-term storage — localStorage can be cleared by browser maintenance, private-browsing mode, or OS clean-up tools.
  • Opening the notepad in a private/incognito window expecting notes to persist after the window closes — private browsing clears localStorage on exit.
  • Typing sensitive information (passwords, confidential data) and leaving the browser tab open on a shared computer.

Key terms

localStorage
A browser storage mechanism that saves data as key-value pairs on the user's device, with no expiration date and no server involvement.
Autosave
Automatic saving of content as you type, without requiring a manual save action.
